Everybody's Fool

Found a line posted in Facebook this morning that brought me to a single thought. Who are we really fooling we we play a part, when we try to be that which we think is who we should really be? Ultimately the only person we may end up really fooling is ourselves. Sure others may end up buying the story, but does what they think truly matter?

"Everybody's Fool" by Evanescense tells the tale of the fool... who thinks they have everyone else fooled. I think this is aimed primarily at the self styled celebrities but really could go for anyone who's caught up in playing the part. Sadly those that are playing their part are often the last to realise that they're done and caught out. At the end of it all, "To thine own self be true" and all that.

perfect by nature
icons of self-indulgence
just what we all need
more lies about a world that

never was and never will be
have you no shame? Don't you see me?
you know you've got everybody fooled

look here she comes now
bow down and stare in wonder
oh how we love you
no flaws when you're pretending
but now i know she

never was and never will be
you don't know how you've betrayed me
and somehow you've got everybody fooled

without the mask where will you hide?
can't find yourself lost in your lie

i know the truth now
i know who you are
and i don't love you anymore

it never was and never will be
you don't know how you've betrayed me
and somehow you've got everybody fooled

it never was and never will be
you're not real and you can't save me
somehow now you're everybody's fool

Ever notice that the longer we spend trying to fool everyone else, the only one that ends up being fooled is really ourselves?
