I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper

I figured I would pick a few songs this week purely because their videos were so horribly bad. Subsequently I think they're great.

"I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper" by Sarah Brightman and Hot Gossip has to be easily one of the worst music videos I've seen to date. Check it out here.

This particular track was released in 1978 (before I was born!) and was the beginning of what would be a fantastic career in music for Sarah. Although I think all the shiny spandex wasn't really the way to start. That said, if David Bowie can rock it out... why not try.

Oh...

Hey, Captain Strange
Won't you be my lover
You're the best thing
That I've ever discovered
Flash Gordon's left me
He's gone to the stars
And evil Darth Vader
Has me banished to Mars

Tell me, Captain Strange
Do you feel my devotion
Or are you like a droid
Devoid of emotion
Encounters one and two
Are not enough for me
What my body needs
Is close encounter three

I lost my heart to a starship trooper
Flashing light in hyper space
Fighting for the Federation
Hand in hand we'll conquor space

Listen, Captain Strange
What's our destination
The scanners seem to
Indicate a small devation
Static on the comm
It's Starfleet Command
Requesting your position
It's their final demand

You're intentions are known
They've found out at least
So if you're gonna take me
Please make it fast
Touch me
Feel me
Do what you will
I want to feel
That galactic thrill

I lost my heart to a starship trooper
Flashing light in hyper space

Memory

I've always enjoyed Sarah Brightman (although what was she thinking when doing "Starship Tooper"?) but for reasons unknown to me, this one just popped into my head on my way into work this morning.

"Memory" from Cats is a sombre thought on what once was. I guess we all can look back and see just how wonderful things may have been, or at least the potential. Thing is we only ever move in one direction.

Midnight, Not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory?
She is smiling alone
In the lamplight
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan

Memory, All alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
I was beautiful then
I remember
The time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again

Every street lamp
Seems to beat
A fatalistic warning
Someone mutters
And a street lamp gutters
And soon it will be morning

Daylight, I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I mustn't give in
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new life will begin

Burnt out ends of smoky days
The stale cold smell of morning
The street lamp dies
Another night is over
Another day is dawning

Touch me, It's so easy to leave me
All alone with my memory
Of my days in the sun
If you touch me
You'll understand what happiness is
Look a new day has begun...

Every new day is a whole new life.

Captain Nemo

For some reason this one just popped into my head. One of Sarah's better songs (if you consider that god awful "Starship Trooper" video you'll know what I mean).

Looking for vengeance won't get you very far. A motto that I've pretty much always followed. I think if even Captain Nemo can learn this one (in this song), just walk away... Just go home.

Under the surface so crystal clear
Everyone was really tense
Waiting down there
He had his own world just like I had mine
We'll go separate ways 'til the next time
There are no words to say as
My friend swims away

Captain Nemo said, "okay"
(five, four, three, two, one)
Then I raised my hand and waved
Captain Nemo went away
(Love me when I'm gone)
Left me all alone, Nemo's going home

And as I watched him, police boats approached
An alien force haunting us like ghosts
"Wish I could stay here and play for a while
But I must be on my way..."
The warmest of smiles
Then he dived into the waves among the other whales

Captain Nemo said, "okay"
(five, four, three, two, one)
Then I raised my hand and waved
Captain Nemo went away
(Love me when I'm gone)
Left me all alone, Nemo's going home...

I guess sometimes it's just better to just wave and not say a word.
