My Medicine

Ever feel like you're not quite with it? That somehow everything around us doesn't add up, or worse yet that when it does that it finally makes even less sense? This is the inspiration for today's tune.

I guess at times we're left feeling like we're not really knowing what's going on around us, almost as if we're taking a trip. Perhaps we want to be taking a trip? "My Medicine" by a The Pretty Reckless is one of those that tells the tale of that spiral. Neither downward or upward but never returning to the same point either.

While stimulants of all kinds may have an effect, it is those around us that can throw more into the mix than anything we could possibly inflict on ourselves. I'm not sure why that is, doubt I ever will.

Somebody mixed my medicine
Somebody mixed my medicine

You hurt where you sleep
And you sleep where you lie
Now you're in deep and
now you're gonna cry
You got a woman to the left
and a boy to the right
Start to sweat so hold me tight

Somebody mixed my medicine
I don't know what I'm on
Somebody mixed my medicine
But baby it's all gone
Somebody mixed my medicine
Somebody's in my head again
Somebody mixed my medicine again, again

I'll drink what you leak
And I'll smoke what you sigh
Straight across the room with a look in your eye
I got a man to the left and a girl to the right
Start to sweat so hold me tight

Somebody mixed my medicine
I don't know what I'm on
Somebody mixed my medicine
But baby it's all gone
Somebody mixed my medicine
Somebody's in my head again
Somebody mixed my medicine again, again

There's a tiger in the room
and a baby in the closet
Pour another drink mom
I don't even want it
Then I turn around and think I see
someone that looks like you

You hurt where you sleep
You sleep where you lie
Now you're in deep and
now you're gonna cry
You got a woman to the left
and a boy to the right
Start to sweat so hold me tight

Somebody mixed my medicine
I don't know what I'm on
Somebody mixed my medicine
But baby it's all gone
Somebody mixed my medicine
Somebody's in my head again
Somebody mixed my medicine
again [x8]

Somebody mixed my medicine [x3]
Somebody's in my head again
Somebody mixed my medicine
again [x3]

It really is so easy to have someone arrive and mix it all up, to not really know what you're on. Thankfully while often having negative effects, they can also be positive.

Just Tonight

Weeeeeeeell...

This is an interesting one and one of my current favourites. Actually that may in part be because it's the first song I've been able to play completely on my acoustic guitar from start to finish. That aside, I think it kinda found me more than the other way round.

"Just Tonight", another song from The Pretty Reckless describes far too many people for my liking. I think in many ways it might just describe me in ways I'd rather not see. Does anyone ever really see who you really are? Do you ever really know who they are? I guess those questions pale in comparison to the question, "Do you really want to?" Isn't just so much easier to see or believe what we want to... or worse yet to offer that which we believe is wanted rather than who we really are. Ultimately this could go round and round in circles.

Here we are and I can think from all the pills
Hey, start the car and take me home
Here we are and you're too drunk to hear a word I say
Start the car and take me home

Just tonight I will stay
And we'll throw it all away
When the light hits your eyes
It's telling me I'm right
And if I, I am through
It's all because of you
Just tonight

But here I am and I can't seem to see straight
But I'm too numb to feel right now
And here I am watching the clock that's ticking away my time
I'm too numb to feel right now

Just tonight I will stay
And we'll throw it all away
When the light hits your eyes
It's telling me I'm right
And if I, I am through
It's all because of you
Just tonight

Just Tonight

Do you understand who I am
Do you wanna know
Can you really see through me now
I am 'bout to go

But just tonight I won't leave
I'll lie and you'll believe
Just tonight I will see
It's all because of me

Just tonight I will stay
And we'll throw it all away
When the light hits your eyes
It's telling me I'm right
And if I, I am through
It's all because of you
Just tonight

It's all because of you
Just tonight

It's all because of you
Just tonight

It's all because of you
Just tonight

It's all because of you
Just tonight

Maybe we just settle for "just tonight" far too often that eventually it becomes the next and so on? Are we just settling a lie to oneself has to be the most despicable.

Zombie

In the fashion of taking 2011 and making it mine today's tune "Zombie" stands as an example of what I will not let happen.

For the most part I just wasn't getting this one for a long, long time. Then suddenly it just clicked. After constantly being broken down (wronged) the character in this song eventually loses touch with reality, all feeling and all emotion. Just going through the motions. Kinda sad really because after all, there's more to life than just being there or simply breathing. You have to participate.

Another great track from The Pretty Reckless that reminds me that often others can turn you into that zombie.

I'm not listening to you
I am wandering right through existance
With no purpose and no drive
'Cause in the end we're all alive, alive

Two thousand years I've been awake
Waiting for the day to shake

To all of you who've wronged me
I am, I am a zombie
Again, again you want me to fall on my head
I am, I am, I am a zombie
How low, how low, how low will you push me
To go, to go, to go, before I lay, lay down dead

Blow the smoke right off the tube
Kiss my gentle burning bruise
I'm lost in time
And to all the people left behind
You are walking dumb and blind, blind

And two thousand years I've been awake
Waiting for the day to shake

Dear all of you who've wronged me
I am, I am a zombie
Again, again you want me to fall on my head
I am, I am, I am a zombie
How low, how low, how low will you push me
To go, to go, to go, before I lay, lay down dead
Oh dead, Oh dead, Oh dead

To all of you who've wronged me
I am, I am a zombie
Again, again you want me to fall on my head

I am I am I am a zombie
How low, how low, how low will you push me
To go, to go, to go, before I lie down dead

Hit me, break me, push me down or wrong me but I'll never be that zombie.

Superhero

Been "sharing" a bit of late and came across this gem, also by The Pretty Reckless (making it two in two days).

I think we're all searching for a hero one way or another. Deep down we're all responsible for our own short comings or awesomeness. Heroes as depicted in media or even in film are far and few between and even then at the end of the day they're still only really doing for themselves. Kind of makes me think of that saying there is no unselfish act... even if the only reward is self gratification.

Super Hero or Super Villain we can so easily play either side and often jump from one to the other. Who do we hurt? Generally ourselves... who's the most likely to save you? Yourself.

Todays tune, "Superhero"...

All alone again searchin for somethin'
There's no one left to save me now
I won't be afraid I just thought you'd catch me
But you're not here to save me now

I've had my share of criminals
And you're no different from them all

I need a superhero cause I am just a girl
And I have no one who will go
And save me from this world
Come to me you superhero
Cause I am just a girl
I know cause you're no
Superhero

What did I expect I thought you'd help me
But I was crushed and beaten down

Yeah I've had my share of criminals
And you're no different from them all

I need a superhero cause I am just a girl
And I have no one who will go
And save me from this world
Come to me you superhero
Cause I am just a girl
I know cause you're no
Superhero

I'm hangin on the edge of the world
I'm clutching to a string
And my life is crumbling down

I need a superhero someone to save me
I need a superhero someone to save me

I need a superhero cause I am just a girl
And I have no one who will go
And save me from this world
Come to me you superhero
Cause I am just a girl
I know cause you're no superhero

I think most fail to realise that the superhero is inside themselves.

Make Me Wanna Die

I just love this one from the soundtrack to the movie, Kick-Ass. If you haven't seen it, do yourself the favour and do so. It's not exactly your classic "A Super Hero" is born plot. Although the description in the IMDb states that he has no reason to become a super hero, I think they missed the fact that we all have many reasons to do so but you'll get that a little better when you watch the movie.

The Pretty Reckless headed by Taylor Momsen (who you might know from Gossip Girl) has really grown on me so far. A bizarre kind of setup but hey, it it was any more normal, would it be another track from Britney? I'm just sayin'

Including the Intro (non-radio friendly version)

Damon Macready: So... Have you thought a little more about what you might want for your birthday?
Mindy Macready: Can I get a puppy?
Damon Macready: [surprised] You wanna get a dog?
Mindy Macready: Yeah, a cuddly fluffy one, and a Bratz movie-star make over Sasha!
Damon Macready: [stunned]
Mindy Macready: [laughs] I'm just fucking with you Daddy! Look, I'd love a Benchmade model 42 butterfly knife.
Damon Macready: [relieved] Oh, child... You always knock me for a loop!

Take me I'm alive
Never was a girl with a wicked mind
But everything looks better when sun goes down

I had everything
Opportunities for eternity
And I could belong to the night
Your eyes, your eyes
I can see in your eyes
Your eyes

You make me wanna die
I'll never be good enough
You make me wanna die
And everything you love will burn up in the light
Every time I look inside your eyes
Make me wanna die

Taste me, drink my soul
Show me all the things that I shouldn't know
And there's a new moon on the rise

I had everything
Opportunities for eternity
And I could belong to the night
Your eyes, your eyes
I can see in your eyes
Your eyes everything in your eyes, your eyes

You make me wanna die
I'll never be good enough
You make me wanna die
And everything you love will burn up in the light
Every time I look inside your eyes (burning in the light)
Make me wanna die

I'll die for you my love, my love
I'll lie for you my love, my love (make me wanna die)
I'll steal for you, my love, my love (make me wanna die)
I'll die for you my love, my love
Well burn up in the light

Every time I look inside your eyes
I'm burning in the light
Every time I look inside your eyes
I'm burning in the light
Every time I look inside your eyes
Make me wanna die

Opportunities for eternity, something we seem to forget. Some things can last forever.
