Anything But Ordinary

I know that I've posted this one before, but keeping with the theme of all things ordinary I just had to post it.

"Anything But Ordinary" by Avril Lavigne is another of my favourites.  In many ways it sums what I'm all about, I'm not really one to go out of my way to break rules, that tends to happen along the way.  But in a world that seems to celebrate being part of the collective, where mediocrity seems to be celebrated, I want to be anything but that.

Ordinary World

Sticking with the theme of being ordinary I've included the Duran Duran track, "Ordinary World".  I think we all want to escape into that world which is ordinary at times.  Although I think somehow simply learning to survive isn't enough... what's a life that's simply ordinary?  No, think I'll settle easier knowing that I've done things a little less ordinary.

The chorus of this particular song is bitterly sad.  While seemly relating to the loss of a lover or simply a broken heart, it could really relate to just about anything, there's no doubt that the "won't cry for yesterday" relates to any loss of some kind.  I've heard a lot of people say that yesterday is gone, but it is those days lost that have helped shape us... by all means, cry if you need to but never settle for an ordinary world.

Everybody's Free

Following on from yesterdays take of ordinary days...

I've posted this before, then again I've posted a few others before too. There are those days that seem like any other, and then a Tuesday strikes.  "Everybody's Free" is one of those tracks that describes this properly.  Baz Luhrmann gets it right in a mixture of poetry and song.  That said, the poetry comes from Mary Schmich although I'm not sure about the music.

Ultimately while vary wary of Monday's, it's Tuesdays that haunt me the most...  Just those random days, they start like any other...


Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of '99. Wear sunscreen.
If I could offer you one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my 
own meandering experience... I will dispense this advice now

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh, 
nevermind, you will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until 
they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years you'll look back at photos of yourself 
and recall in a way you can't grasp now, how much possibility lay before 
you and how fabulous you really looked. You are NOT as fat as you imagine. 

Don't worry about the future; or worry, but know that 
worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by 
chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in life are apt to be things that never 
crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday

Do one thing everyday that scares you.

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours. 

Floss. 

Don't waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long, and in the end, it's only with yourself. 

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing 
this, tell me how. 

Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements. 

Stretch. 

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. 
The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do 
with their lives; some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still 
don't. 

Get plenty of calcium. 

Be kind to your knees, you'll miss them when they're gone. 

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you 
won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40. Maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on 
your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate 
yourself too much or berate yourself either - your choices are half chance, 
so are everybody else's.

Enjoy your body, use it every way you can... don't be afraid of it, or what 
other people think of it... it's the greatest instrument you'll ever own. 

Dance... even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room. 

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them. 

Do NOT read beauty magazines they will only make you feel UGLY. 

Get to know your parents, you never know when they might be gone for good. 
Be nice to your siblings; they're your best link to your past and the 
people most likely to stick with you in the future

Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you should 
hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle because the 
older you get, the more you need the people you knew
when you were young. 

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in 
Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel. 

Accept certain inalienable truths. Prices will rise, Politicians will 
philander, you too will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when 
you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble, and children 
respected their elders. 

Respect your elders. 

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, 
maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might 
run out. 

Don't mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will look 85. 

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. 
Advice is a form of nostalgia; dispensing it is a way of fishing the past 
from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts, and 
recycling it for more than it's worth. 

But trust me on the sunscreen.

Ordinary Day

It happens fairly frequently than any ordinary day becomes something a lot more.

Today I'm going with "Ordinary Day" by Vanessa Carlton is such a cheery track that I just had to throw it at Monday.  The lines, "that everyday he finds, just what he's looking for" really sum up so much, you really will always find what you're looking for, but, the trick remains to shine.

There's so much about this song that I just love but think at the end of it all, it's about turning every day into something more than ordinary, "live while you can" is one of those lines that's been stolen and people now use it as an excuse to do silly things.  Ultimately they've got it rather wrong, do things because you need to live while you can... by all means look back afterwards and think, "heck that was silly or even down right stupid" if you must.

So for every ordinary day to be had:

I Wanna Go

It's been ages since my last post, so think I had better get back to it.  So no place better to start than well...

I've posted this one before... but because it makes me happy I'm going to post it again.  "I Wanna Go" by Britney is one of those rather, different tracks.  As with so many of Britney's tracks of late this tells a story that you might not get up front, but think about for a while.

If you're really looking for a laugh, check out the music video.  Although I'm not so sure about that one guy being cool.  Ultimately it gets the job done, you can't look away wondering at what exactly will be happening next.

Rock Star


I know it's been a while, I've gotten a little slack of late, but hope to fix that in the coming future.

I've finally done it, signed up for music lessons.  It was about time I learned to actually play one of my guitars, so who knows.  But hope it's going to break out a more creative and different side to me, been feeling a little 2 dimensional of late, and as the saying goes the only one that can change things is me.

Today's track comes from Miley because heck, as it turns out, "I might even be a rock star" and I'm pretty sure it's my time to shine.  If anyone's seen "The Rocker" you'll know that it's never too late to have a go at the big time... That said, I'm just looking for my time.

Dark Paradise

Well, I've not posted in a while but... I'm back.

Spent Saturday at my local pub and enjoyed a full on music festival put on by the local music school.  While they were all pretty awesome, two caught my imagination most of all.  Little Gemma, at just 8, was fantastic, covering "Call Me, Maybe" which really made me chuckle.  And an unknown who really did an amazing cover of "Video Games" by Lana Del Rey.

Today's song is "Dark Paradise" by Lana Del Rey.  I've had it on my playlist for a while and somehow it just kinda reminds me that time keeps ticking by... that things keep changing, but the more they do, the more stable many other things become.

With that in mind, I've decided that it's about time I took out my poor guitar and actually took a few lessons. Deep down there's a song in everyone, just need to find mine.  A quiet place in the dark that'll remind me of who I really am.
