I'm always a little slow behind what's most popular on radio, mostly because most things get played to death and it's only much later that I think back to a few select tracks and wonder what happened.
Today's song, "Set Fire to the Rain" by Adele is one of these songs. While there are many deeper meanings that one can take from this song, it seems that the inspiration for this came from nothing more meaningful than trying to light a cigarette in the rain. Seems that in the pouring rain it becomes a rather difficult process.
As it's winter at the moment and I'm really not a cold person, I feel the need to set fire to many things to simply feel a little more warmth.
I let it fall, my heart,
And as it fell you rose to claim it.
It was dark and I was over,
Until you kissed my lips and you saved me.
My hands they're strong, but my knees were far too weak, to
stand in your arms without falling to your feet,
But there's a side to you that I never knew, never knew.
All the things you'd say, they were never true, never true,
And the games you'd play, you would always win, always win.
But I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
well, it burned while I cried,
Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name!
When i lay with you I could stay there,
Close my eyes, feel you here forever,
You and me together, nothing is better!
Cause there's a side to you that I never, never knew,
All the things you'd say, they were never true, never true,
And the games you'd play, you would always win, always win.
But I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
well, it burned while I cried,
Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name!
I set fire to the rain
And I threw us into the flames
when we fell something died,
Cause I knew that that was the last time, the last time!
Sometimes I wake up by the door,
That heart you caught must be waiting for you
Even now when we're already over
I can't help myself from looking for you.
I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
well, it burned while I cried,
Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name
I set fire to the rain,
And I threw us into the flames
when we fell something died
Cause I knew that that was the last time
The last time, oh, oh no
let it burn oh
let it burn
let it burn
Then again, I guess setting fire to somethings can bring us a little warmth one way or another.

Soft Kitty
Today's tune kept running through my head last night and this morning. Anyone who's a fan of the tv show, "Big Bang Theory" will recognise this as Sheldon's song. For similar reasons it just makes me happy.
Soft Kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur
Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, purr purr purr
Not many things better than being able to curl up with a soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur.

Not many things better than being able to curl up with a soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur.

Conversations With My 13 Year Old Self
A random thought crossed my mind over the weekend that kinda resurfaced this morning, would I would be able to look from my 8 year old self and consider current self pretty awesome. While we're generally getting older (note, not always growing up) we tend to abandon a lot of the things that we held most dear to us, not always for the better.
Today's song, "Conversations With My 13 Year Old Self" by Pink is told the other way round where it's more consoling a younger self. Imagine if you could go back and actually talk to a younger you. Would you offer advice, would you give instruction or would you say nothing knowing that each and every event has helped make you you?
Conversations with my thirteen year old self
Conversations with my thirteen year old self
You're angry
I know this
The world couldn't care less
You're lonely
I feel this
And you wish you were the best
No teachers
Or guidance
And you always walk alone
You're crying
At night when
Nobody else is home
Come over here and let me hold your hand and hug you darling
I promise you that it won't always feel this bad
There are so many things I want to say to you
You're the girl I used to be
You little heartbroken thirteen year old me
You're laughing
But you're hiding
God I know that trick too well
You forget
That I've been you
And now I'm just the shell
I promise
I love you and
Everything will work out fine
Don't try to
Grow up yet
Oh just give it some time
The pain you feel is real you're not asleep but it's a nightmare
But you can wake up anytime
Oh don't lose your passion or the fighter that's inside of you
You're the girl I used to be
The pissed off complicated thirteen year old me
Conversations with my thirteen year old self
Conversations with my thirteen year old self
Until we meet again
Oh I wish you well oh
I wish you well
Little girl
Until we meet again
Oh
I wish you well
Little girl
I wish you well
Until we meet again
My little thirteen year old me
I'm still not growing up, but, reckon that I'd be pretty pleased with the way I've reached this point in life. Think I'd offer myself a drink and tell the tale of how awesome my little cat is.

The Unforgiven Ones
Now here's a band that seemed to hit some pretty big highs in the early 90's then just disappear from sight. The Crash Test Dummies were one my first CD's (God Shuffled His Feet) and still all round my feel good band.
It seems that Brad Roberts decided that he simply wasn't making money from music so kinda faded away for a while... then once he'd accepted this he suddenly started making music again - for the love of it.
And that leaves us with today's song, "The Unforgiven Ones". I'm not quite sure I get it. While it covers both the good and bad, the unforgiven ones don't seem to really fall into either category. Perhaps, just maybe it's because things can't be put down in pure black or white, but rather just a multitude of shades of gray?
The guilty and the innocents
The prisoners and the free
The ugly and the beautiful
The ones who are yet to be
Some are sinners, some repent
Some are never done
And then there's those like you and I
The unforgiven ones
The unforgiven ones
The rock that ships run up against
No matter how they tack
The murderers and the murdered ones
And the ones who don't come back
Some are sinners, some repent
Some are never done
And then there's those like you and I
The unforgiven ones
The unforgiven ones
The one whose heart is of a saint
The other's black as night
The one who never wondered
What made something wrong, or right
Some are sinners, some repent
Some are never done
And then there's those like you and I
The unforgiven ones
The unforgiven ones
Unforgiven perhaps, then again I never asked for it.

I'd Do Anything for Love
Today's tune I've had stuck in my head so just had to share it. "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" by Meat Loaf was mostly played to death in the 90's - so brings up some pretty good memories.
If memory serves me correctly this was Meat Loaf's comeback supported by "Bat out of Hell II". Some classic rock that should pretty much stand the test of time. Not to mention that this song is referred to in "Spice World" the movie.
And I would do anything for love,
I'd run right into hell and back.
I would do anything for love,
I'll never lie to you and that's a fact.
But I'll never forget the way you feel right now, oh no, no way.
And I would do anything for love,
Oh I would do anything for love,
I would do anything for love,
But I won't do that,
No I won't do that.
And some days it don't come easy,
And some days it don't come hard,
Some days it don't come at all, and these are the days that never end.
And some nights you're breathing fire.
And some nights you're carved in ice.
Some nights you're like nothing I've ever seen before or will again.
And maybe I'm crazy.
Oh it's crazy and it's true.
I know you can save me, no one else can save me now but you.
As long as the planets are turning.
As long as the stars are burning.
As long as your dreams are coming true, you'd better believe it!
That I would do anything for love,
And I'll be there till the final act.
And I would do anything for love,
And I'll take the vow and seal a pact.
But I'll never forgive myself if we don't go all the way, tonight.
And I would do anything for love,
But I won't do that.
No, I won't do that!
I would do anything for love,
Anything you've been dreaming of,
But I just won't do that.
[x2]
[Solo]
And some days I pray for silence,
And some days I pray for soul,
Some days I just pray to the god of sex and drums and rock 'n' roll!
And maybe I'm lonely,
That's all I'm qualified to be.
There's just one and only, one and only promise I can keep.
As long as the wheels are turning.
As long as the fires are burning.
As long as your prayers are coming true, you'd better believe it!
That I would do anything for love,
And you know it's true and that's a fact.
I would do anything for love,
And there'll never be no turning back.
But I'll never do it better than I do it with you, so long, so long.
And I would do anything for love,
Oh, I would do anything for love,
I would do anything for love,
But I won't do that.
No, no, no, I won't do.....
I would do anything for love.
Anything you've been dreaming of.
But I just won't do that!
[x3]
But I'll never stop dreaming of you,
Every night of my life.
No way.
And I would do anything for love.
But I won't do that.
No I won't do that.
[Girl]
Will you raise me up, will you help me down?
Will you get me right out of this God forsaken town?
Will you make it all a little less cold?
[Boy]
I can do that. Oh I can do that.
[Girl]
Will you cater to every fantasy I've got?
Will you hose me down with holy water, if I get too hot? Hot!
Will you take me places I've never known?
[Boy]
Now I can do that! Oh oh now, I can do that!
[Girl]
After awhile you'll forget everything.
It was a brief interlude
And a midsummer night's fling,
And you'll see that it's time to move on.
[Boy]
I won't do that. I won't do that.
[Girl]
I know the territory, I've been around,
It'll all turn to dust and will all fall down,
Sooner or later, you'll be screwing around.
[Boy]
I won't do that. No, I won't do that.
Anything for love,
Oh, I would do anything for love,
I would do anything for love,
But I won't do that.
No, I won't do that.
There are always those things that we won't do, or those that we hope to never do. Although I guess the real answer to all of those things, the one that that one can never do for love is, I guess, to stop loving someone.

YMCA
I've been pretty much hiding from the cold and subsequently from most of the world the past few days. Yup, as mentioned before I really don't like the cold.
Today's tune in keeping with a much more lighthearted tune for Friday's is "YMCA" by the Village People. This was the backing track to possibly the greatest shootout scene in any movie. Yup, you read that right! If you've seen One Night at McCool's then you'll understand, if not then watch it! Trust me, you'll understand.
I've heard that you can't have a party album without this song because that would be like making a cheesecake without the cheese. Ultimately my mother would define a good party as any party where someone throws up and at some point the Village People get played. Can't really argue with either of those.
Young man, there's no need to feel down.
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground.
I said, young man, 'cause you're in a new town
There's no need to be unhappy.
Young man, there's a place you can go.
I said, young man, when you're short on your dough.
You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.
They have everything that you need to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys ...
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.
You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal
You can do whatever you feel ...
Young man, are you listening to me?
I said, young man, what do you want to be?
I said, young man, you can make real your dreams.
But you've got to know this one thing!
No man does it all by himself.
I said, young man, put your pride on the shelf,
And just go there, to the Y.M.C.A.
I'm sure they can help you today.
You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal,
You can do whatever you feel ...
Young man, I was once in your shoes.
I said, I was down and out with the blues.
I felt no man cared if I were alive.
I felt the whole world was so jive ...
That's when someone came up to me,
And said, young man, take a walk up the street.
It's a place there called the Y.M.C.A.
They can start you back on your way.
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.

Just Like You
Got into work today and found this gem in my facebook stream. So, how could I not add it in.
"Just Like You" by Three Days Grace kinda sums up the way I feel at times. I could be like "you" those that live with their masks on so long that they eventually become reliant on it, yet despise it at the same time.
While I'll not be like that because it'll simply rob me of being me, I wonder how many people become that exact thing that they despise. I wonder how many are angry at having been so fake and so sorry for having lost out on being themselves. Of course this song is more of a dig at an individual, but for me it's more of a take on people that we know - possibly even just a single person too mind you.
I could be mean
I could be angry
You know I could be just like you
I could be fake
I could be stupid
You know I could be just like you
You thought you were standing beside me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be just like you
You thought you were there to guide me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be
Just like you (Just like you)
You thought you were there to guide me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be
Just like you
I could be cold
I could be ruthless
You know I could be just like you
I could be weak
I could be senseless
You know I could be just like you
You thought you were standing beside me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be just like you
You thought you were there to guide me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be
Just like you (just like you)
You thought you were there to guide me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be
Just like you
On my own, cause I can't take livin' with you
I'm alone, so I won't turn out like
You want me to
You thought you were standing beside me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be just like you
You thought you were there to guide me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be
Just like you (just like you)
You thought you were there to guide me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be
Just like you
I could be mean
I could be angry
You know I could be just like you
Or, I could simply choose to be me.

You're wrong if you think that I'll be
Just like you
I could be cold
I could be ruthless
You know I could be just like you
I could be weak
I could be senseless
You know I could be just like you
You thought you were standing beside me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be just like you
You thought you were there to guide me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be
Just like you (just like you)
You thought you were there to guide me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be
Just like you
On my own, cause I can't take livin' with you
I'm alone, so I won't turn out like
You want me to
You thought you were standing beside me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be just like you
You thought you were there to guide me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be
Just like you (just like you)
You thought you were there to guide me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be
Just like you
I could be mean
I could be angry
You know I could be just like you
Or, I could simply choose to be me.
